101129 Kyuhyun, thoughts on his ‘First acting challenge’

Kyuhyun’s ‘First acting challenge’,
“Worries as to why among Suju members he was not offered a part in musicals”

On November 29, during an interview around 1 PM, Super Junior Kyuhyun expressed his thoughts on his first challenge in a musical after his debut. On this day, besides Kyuhyun, the practice room also saw the presence of Yoon Joonsang, Uhm Kijoon, ChunSangJiHee Dana, Kim Jinsoo, Min Yeongki, and other actors.

On the public site of the practice room for the open rehearsal of the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’, at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul, Kyuhyun confessed “More than half of the Super Junior members have confronted themselves with musicals, so I was worried as to why I alone wasn’t getting any offer.” In fact, among all Super Junior members, Yesung, Sungmin, Donghae, Kangin, and Heechul have experienced appearing in musicals before. Especially Yesung, who has a solid role as a musical actor after having played in ‘South Korean Mountain Fortress’, ‘Hong Gil Dong’, and ‘Spamalot’.

On this day, Kyuhyun talked about how he was given the opportunity to have his first musical role, and how he was picked to be one of the actors in ‘The Three Musketeers’. He disclosed that “I didn’t choose to be in ‘The Three Musketeers’, it’s ‘The Three Musketeers’ that chose me,” and “I present myself with a heart full of gratitude towards all the people who let me join this production.” He also added with determination, “And since I have been chosen by the producers of the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’ to fill in the role of D’Artagnan, I will do my best.”

Kyuhyun, who is now getting initiated to acting, said with a laugh “I have really been wanting to give musicals a try since long. More than half of the members already did a musical, so I troubled myself thinking ‘Why isn’t any musical being offered to me’. But while I was agonizing over it, I got my musical! Luckily, for my very first time, I’m with ‘The Three Musketeers’ sunbaenims who are really amazing, and that makes me feel good.”

Then he talked about his aspirations, “Although I’ve never done acting, not even once, I’m adapting to the sunbaenims’ mentality one by one. I’m really worried, but they have been giving me a lot of advice, so I think I’m going to get better in skill.” He then opened his heart and admitted, “So, although I truly wanted to be in a musical, I clearly lack in conveying and expressing emotions because I don’t have any experience in acting. But I also believe I can improve by carefully observing my sunbaenims.”

Set in the France of the 17th century, ‘The Three Musketeers’ is a musical about D’Artagnan, a young man who dreams of becoming a musketeer of the royal family, and the court’s Musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The adventures of these people and the conspiracy of the powerful cardinal of the French royal household will liven up this musical.

At the end of 2010, ‘The Three Musketeers’ will start to be performed in the splendidly decorated Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul, going from December 15 until January 30 (tickets price range: 40,000~120,000 won).

101129 The Three Musketeers: Kyuhyun, ‘I found confidence’

Kyuhyun, “I found confidence for this musical thanks to the sunbaenims’ support”

On the site of the practice room for the open rehearsal of the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’, Super Junior Kyuhyun, who is confronting himself with a musical for the first time, confessed that the advice and encouragements he receives from his sunbaes give him great strength.

Although the other actors have been working together on the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’ since June, Kyuhyun had to join them much later (only around the beginning of October) due to his schedule with the rest of the Super Junior members. Because of this, he revealed his apologetic heart and said “I’m so sorry I couldn’t even be present to practice properly, I will show you a very hard-working image.”

Kyuhyun admitted his worries “Since this is my first musical, there’s a sense of uneasiness and I feel pressured. I’m still lacking in many areas, so all the advice my sunbaes give me push me to do well too.”

When questioned on who gives him the best advice, Kyuhyun said that every piece of advice coming from Kim Buprae, Cha Bumsuk, Kim Mooyeol, and other actors is valuable to him. Kyuhyun also added “It’s especially Kim Buprae sunbae who looks at me and whispers at me to not move around restlessly, and to stand still while acting,” NOTE and “While Seobum sunbae always advises me to say my lines louder. There’s so much to say, even Kim Mooyeol sunbae gives me suggestions on my acting, they help me improve where I’m still lacking in skill.”

At the question “Isn’t there any of your subaes who warned or intimidated you when giving advice?”, Kyuhyun answered “It’s not like that,” but at the end of the interview he left the words “Kim Buprae sunbaenim..” lingering in the air, causing everyone to burst out laughing while his sunbae took the microphone to say “I love you, Super Junior!” out loud.

That day, during the ‘Angel in my heart’ scene, the kiss scene between D’Artagnan (Kyuhyun) and Constance (Kim Ahsun)’s was revealed. Kyuhyun explained “The song ‘Angel in my heart’ is about Constance’s suffering after having been kidnapped, and is sung when she is later on rescued by Her Majesty, around then I fall in love with Constance again and we kiss.”

When asked if it’s a deep kiss scene, Kyuhyun said with a smile “Luckily since the producers are very considerate, they allow me to do it while covering up with a hat.”

TRANSLATOR’S NOTE At first Kyuhyun simply wanted to share what kind of advice he received, so he seemed to want to mention his sunbaes one by one. However, since the latters obviously knew what they have been telling him during practice, they jokingly told him to watch his mouth. Again, Kyuhyun started from Kim Buprae (who probably scolded him when he didn’t do well) so the other sunbaes started fooling around and talking all at once. I believe they thought Kyuhyun was going to tell on him and they advised him not to (someone shouted something along the lines of “Won’t you regret this?”), but he was nice and said that his sunbae told him what to do in a soft voice. But then one of the sunbaes said that Kim Buprae also hit him, and Kyuhyun just smiled because they weren’t letting him speak. All in all you get a really nice feeling out of this press conference, Kyuhyun is clearly enjoying this experience and is learning a lot. All the people involved in this production seem to love working with him.

‘The Three Musketeers’ Kyuhyun confesses: kiss scene with an actress? Fearing a big storm.

In the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’, Super Junior Kyuhyun plays D’Artagnan, a young man who leaves the countryside to become a musketeer of the royal household. On November 29, at the press concert for the open rehearsal of the musical, Kyuhyun stated “I have a kiss scene in this musical”. Then, he hinted at his mental worries over it and disclosed “I’m worried enough already.”

In fact, Kyuhyun will be acting out a kiss scene with singer Dana, as well as musical actress Kim Ahsun, who were both casted for the role of Constance. During the highlight of a performance which went on for 50 minutes, Kyuhyun sang while also acting out his kiss scene with Constance (Kim Ahsun) in the ‘Angel in my heart’ scene.

In regard to this, Kyuhyun laughed while explaining his trick “The production fears that if I were to be featured in a kiss scene the impact may be too big. I believe that in the future the kiss is ideally going to be hidden behind a hat or in some other way.” This conscious remark drew laughter from the fans, especially when actor Yoo Joonsang and gagman Kim Jinsoo added “We’re doing this to protect the actresses!”

Kyuhyun’s partner, Dana ㅡ who will be acting in a kiss scene with Kim Mooyeol, Won Kijoon, and TRAX Jay (casted as D’Artagnan) ㅡ revealed her plans “I will stay focused on being Constance when engaging in the kiss” and, apparently concerned with the fans, she said “It’s true that I’m especially worried about the scene with Kyuhyun. But I will still try my best for this kiss scene as well.”

On that day, Kyuhyun brilliantly showed his acting through a variety of scenes ㅡ such as an outstanding swordmanship performance during a fencing scene ㅡ and also worked in harmony with Kim Ahsun in his love scene.
