Korean boy band Super Junior performs at the Araneta Coliseum

Korean pop group Super Junior is scheduled to hold its first full-length concert, Super Show 2, at the Araneta Coliseum at 7 p.m. tonight, April 10. The all-male performers, better known as SuJu to avid fans, is the first ever K-pop band to hold a major concert at one of the biggest entertainment venues in the Philippines.

In a press conference held earlier today at Edsa Shangri-la in Ortigas, members of Super Junior expressed their excitement for the concert.  “We’ve heard that we’re gonna be having our concert in a big dome, so we’re very much excited for it,” said group leader Leeteuk in Korean. “The whole show is filled with eye-catching surprises.

“There will be a very special performance wherein we dress up as girls,” he further revealed, explaining that they would be mimicking f(x), their sister group from South Korea’s SM Entertainment. “So please watch out for that surprise,” he added.

K-HITS IN LOCAL CHARTS. SuJu has visited a total of nine cities for Super Show 2, including Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing and Bangkok, with the Philippines as the last leg of their Asian tour. Their song “Sorry Sorry” from their album of the same title catapulted the group to stardom in this country. They are currently the first male singing  group from South Korea to hit the local charts.

“We’re very excited to be here in the Philippines,” continued Leeteuk. “We’ve always wanted to come here.” Member Sungmin added, “The reason why we’ve always wanted to come to the Philippines is because there were a lot of fans who came to visit us in Korea to see our radio shows and our musicals… to show their support. There are a lot of fans here in the Philippines that’s why we wanted to come.” Leeteuk later sang a short song for the Filipino fans, saying it reminds him of the Philippines. “It’s something that you cannot see on TV. So it’s very special for you guys.”

KOREANOVELA TIE-UP? One member of SuJu openly expressed his interest to do a television drama in the country. “I’m very shocked to realize that I’m the most popular member here,” said Lee Donghae, after members of the press told the 23-year-old of his popularity among Filipino K-pop fans. He was happy to know that his popularity also meant gaining more attention for SuJu as a group. He later wished that he could make a local soap opera in the future, a statement that endeared him to the press.

GETTING TO KNOW THE MEMBERS. Originally a 13-member group, Super Junior is set to stage their Super Show 2 concert at the Araneta Coliseum with only ten members. One member, Hankyung, recently had his contract terminated by SM Entertainment and another, Kangin, currently has to deal with legal matters outside of Super Junior. Member Kim Kibum is also absent due to solo activities and prior engagements. Fans, however, can expect leader Leeteuk, Filipino favorite Lee Donghae, Korea’s TV heartthrob Choi Siwon (who currently stars in Oh, My Lady!, a Korean television series), actor and stage performer Kim Heechul, actors and hosts Yesung, Shindong and Sungmin, host Eunhyuk, actor Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun to all appear at the concert.

“Thank you so much for all your support and warm welcome,” thanked Donghae. “It’s our first time, however we hope to enjoy the whole time in our show.”  Leeteuk added, “It’s our first visit in the Philippines, but thank you so much for your love and your attention. And we’re very happy to hold our last leg in the Philippines. So please give us your continued support and love for our upcoming music, and we’ll try to show you the best of Super Junior.”

Super Junior’s fourth album is currently underway. All of Super Junior also expressed their wish to come back to the Philippines for Super Show 3, their third Asia tour.

Thanks for the tip STEFFI !!!!!!!!

Super Junior in Philippines

Fans mob Korean boy band

April 9, 2010, 4:38pm

Hundreds of teenage Filipino fans mobbed the Korean hip-hop group Super Junior upon their arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Friday morning. The fans, who numbered close to a thousand, caught airport security off-guard after they jumped the security line and ran towards the Korean boy band after they stepped out of the NAIA arrival curbside. Wanting to get a closer glimpse of their idols, the fans surrounded the six vans the band members were in and started to take photos through the heavily tinted windows. The airport security personnel in the area were no match for the number of fans that rushed to the curbside, preventing the singers’ convoy from moving forward. It took several minutes for security reinforcement to arrive at the scene and clear the area to allow the group’s vehicles to move. As soon as the convoy left the airport, the fans also left and cleared the area

Super Junior Super Show 2
April 10, 7 p.m.
Araneta Coliseum
Cubao, Quezon City

They may sing in a different language, but Korean boy band Super Junior — or SuJu — has proven that music really knows no boundaries. The 13-member group, which was formed in 2005, has been winning fans not only in Seoul, but the rest of the world with their distinct urban contemporary pop sound. Of course, it helps that fans are swept away by the good-looking boys. The members sport stylish haircuts and wear stylish clothes, which compliment their well-choreographed, highly synchronized dance routines.

So despite the language barrier, SuJu’s members — Leeteuk, Heechul, Han Geng, Yesung, Kang-in, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwonm, Ryeowook, Kibum and Kyuhyun — have fans screaming for more, wherever they perform. In Shanghai, Bangkok, or Taipei, SuJu performs its K-pop hits in sold-out concerts. The group’s first Asian tour, dubbed Super Show, made ticket sales records in the venues where they performed.

When SuJu announced a tour in January 2008, over 120,000 fans in Seoul tried to buy the available 13,000 tickets online simultaneously, crashing the computer servers. As soon as the server were back in commission, all the tickets were reportedly sold out in just 18 minutes. The first Super Show concert tour, which ran from February 2008 until March 2009, was said to be so successful that a follow-up Asian tour was announced only three months after the last show in South Korea.

Super Show 2 began another round of concerts in South Korea, China and Thailand. But due to the clamor of fans elsewhere in the region, organizers have expanded the tour to include concerts in Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines. News about the Philippine concert spread like wildfire in the social networking site Facebook and the micro-blog Web site Twitter as early as December. However, organizers officially confirmed SuJu’s April 10 concert at the Araneta Coliseum only in January.

As soon as local concert organizer, Pulp Entertainment, began selling “exclusive” tickets through Facebook in January, the most expensive “super VIP” tickets (which cost as much as P8,500) were snapped up in an instant. As of Tuesday, tickets worth P7,920 for the “standing room only” area near the stage were also all sold out, together with the cheapest general admission tickets (P1,060), prompting organizers to speculate this early that the SuJu concert tomorrow night might break Araneta Coliseum box office records.

But even before the boys of SuJu performs their first song, Pulp Entertainment claimed that the concert will make history as the music event with the largest indoor stage ever built in the country. The stage for the concert will use as many as 329 stage platforms — the previous record for the largest stage used 209 stage platforms. Pulp Entertainment has taken almost a week to set up in the Araneta Coliseum, taking up virtually the entire “patron area” for the stage.

The producers assured that SuJu will have a full concert tomorrow night. “Unlike many international superstars who have come to the Philippines, Super Junior will not be holding out,” the concert organizer said in a statement. “The Super Junior Super Show 2 in Manila will run a minimum of three hours with the band performing over 30 songs with massive amounts of stage effects to boot.”

Because of this, Pulp Entertainment said Araneta Coliseum’s gates will open as early as 5 p.m. since the concert will start promptly at 7 p.m. The group promises to perform all its hits in the concert, including “U,” “Don’t Don,” and “Sorry, Sorry.” And contrary to rumors, SuJu’s official Web site assured that the members will perform all the songs in Manila live, and will not lip-sync in at least six of their production numbers as claimed by the band’s detractors.
